Safe Kids Delaware offers a variety of safety programs to the public and organizations at reduced or no-cost, either under the Safe Kids Delaware umbrella, or through our members and their organizations.
Reduced Cost Car Seat Program
This program is available to social service organizations (state and community) that serve clients in need of car seats, but cannot afford them through traditional means. Safe Kids saw an opportunity to help needy families and developed and implemented a program to make car seats available to families in underserved populations. The program allows social service organizations to refer low income families to an Office of Highway Safety Fitting Station where they can purchase a new car seat at a minimal cost with proper documentation from a social worker or case manager. Clients will receive a brand new car seat, appropriate for their child, along with the education on how to properly install and use the seat.
If an organization would like to become a participating agency, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Free Programs From SK Member/Partner Agencies:
Kids love to ride bicycles but in their excitement don’t always remember how to do so safely. Bicycle rodeos are a fun way to teach rider safety basics. Organizers provide the bicycles and helmets and guide children through a series of exercises on an outdoor obstacle course that is designed to teach them to think about what they’re doing while cruisin’ on their bikes! Call to schedule a bicycle rodeo by emailing Mike O’Malley at email@example.com.
Children experience fire interest. They may ask questions such as how hot is fire or show an interest in fire through playing with fire trucks or cooking on a play stove. This is healthy, and it is time to begin educating about fire. Educational options include presentations for classrooms or communities, as well as the setup of information tables with interactive 911 call simulator. For information on available fire safety programs for the classroom or community, or on the availability of free smoke detectors please contact Mike Lowe or Kim O’Malley at the Delaware State Fire School at (302) 739-4773.
Community Car Seat Check Events
While most parents think they’re installing their children’s car seats correctly, research has shown that four out of five don’t! If you’re an early learning center, business, community or faith based organization, or mom’s club that may be interested in hosting a child safety seat check event let us know! Our partners from the Delaware Office of Highway Safety and Christiana Care Health Systems will be the point people and provide necessary materials and Safe Kids trained child passenger safety technicians to work with families to ensure that their seats are installed correctly. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to request a car seat check event in your area.
Want an in person presentation or information table on a safety topic not listed here? Visit our Safety Topics page for a list of partners who may be able to provide that to you!
